Early in 1975, Jim Rowe and three college pals flew across America in a Cessna 195 from northern Michigan to the Baja California peninsula in Mexico before resting on the beaches of Nome, Alaska. The company Bering Air was founded in September 1979, a few years later. On October 3, 1979, it started up with a single De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter. Later, in 1983, the airline implemented the increasingly well-liked bypass mail system.
