In Port Vila, Vanuatu, at the Air Vanuatu House, the airline’s main office is located.It serves destinations in the South Pacific, including Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia, as well as Vanuatu. Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila serves as its primary base. Early in 1981, following Vanuatu’s year-earlier independence from the UK and France, Air Vanuatu was founded. An agreement with Ansett Airlines for the provision of aircraft and operating personnel was made, and assistance from them was sought. The Vanuatuan government owns the remaining 60% of the new airline, with Ansett taking a 40% stake as well.On September 5th, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31 owned and operated by Ansett flew from Sydney to Port Vila as the inaugural Air Vanuatu flight.
