The national airline of Costa Rica, Avianca Costa Rica S.A., originally Lineas Aéreas Costarricenses S.A., is based in San José and is a minority-owned company of the Synergy Group. More than 35 locations in Central, North, and South America are served by its international scheduled routes. When it was a division of Grupo TACA, the airline was known as TACA/LACSA. Since May 2013, when Avianca acquired Grupo TACA, Avianca Costa Rica has been one of the seven domestically branded airlines run by the Avianca Group of Latin American airlines (together with Avianca Ecuador, Avianca El Salvador, etc.). With the assistance of Pan American World Airways, LACSA was established on October 17, 1945, and it began operating on June 1 of the following year, employing Douglas DC-3s for local services inside Costa.
