The Bahamas Government formed Bahamasair, which officially began operations on June 17, 1973, after purchasing Out Island Airways’ operations and Flamingo Airlines’ routes. Both the first and second flights went to Freeport, Grand Bahama; the first traveled to Andros Island. The airline was renamed Bahamasair after the Bahamas Government acquired 51% of OIA, became the company’s primary shareholder, and part owner. With 49% each, Edward Albury, Gil Hensler, and Sherlock Hackley were the other owners.
