The airline Buraq Air (El-Buraq Air Transport Inc.) is based in Tripoli, Libya, on the premises of Mitiga International Airport. Currently, it runs a modest global scheduled network in addition to extra charter flights and services in support of CHC. Since the larger Tripoli International Airport hasn’t been in use for a while, Mitiga International Airport serves as the airline’s home base. The first privately owned airline in Libya, it was founded on October 22, 2000, and it began flying on November 15, 2001. Its name is derived from the buraq, a bird Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, is said to have flown on to travel from Mecca to Jerusalem and then to the other heavenly realms.
