About Urumqi Air (UQ)
Urumqi Air is a Chinese low-cost carrier that operates domestic and regional flights out of Urumqi Diwopu Airport. The airline was founded as a joint venture between Hainan Airlines and Urumqi Urban Construction Investment. Urumqi Air took over Hainan Airlines’ Urumqi operation and is now licenced to operate local (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) and international passenger and cargo flights. The airline has a fleet of Boeing 737 family planes.
On January 29, 2021, Hainan Airlines reported that creditors had filed a court petition for the restructuring of the airline and its subsidiaries, including Urumqi Air. Despite the “major uncertainty” about whether they will enter the restructuring process, Hainan Airlines declared that its subsidiaries will continue to operate on a daily basis.
